MacOS support?

Self-explanatory - not sure if this discussion happened in the past, but have we considered supporting Kratos in MacOS? Any ideas of how big of a challenge that would be?

I compile and run Kratos on an M1 every now and then. It works fine, with a few caveats.

tl;dr

You'll need homebrew and install the following packages through it.

• cmake
• llvm
• boost
• libomp

Then, you can use the dedicated build script. For example

scripts/mac_build -t RelWithDebInfo -a StructuralMechanicsApplication -a ConstitutiveLawsApplication

compiles core, structural mechanics and constitutive laws in RelWithDebInfo mode. You can query the script for help by passing -h to it.

Details

The main issue on Mac is that Apple's default compiler (Apple Clang) is not standard-conforming and lacks some features Kratos needs (such as OpenMP or some standard library headers), so you need to use a different toolchain.

Compiler

The most popular option to set up a new toolchain is to install one via homebrew (a package manager mostly for Mac). I went with LLVM, but I think @roigcarlo uses GCC. One caveat to mention here is that the default LLVM you can install through homebrew is usually very fresh and often has packaging issues (e.g. misconfigured linker). You can largely avoid this issue if you stick with a specific earlier version that has worked for you before (e.g. brew install llvm@20).

Build Script

The build script heavily focuses on my system and use case. I don't even know whether anyone else uses it, so if you have issues/recommendations for it, you're welcome to share them or open a PR.

By default, it installs Kratos into the site packages directory of your current python environment (the place where pip installs modules), so be sure to create and activate a venv before compiling if you don't want to pollute your system python.

I'll open a PR with some changes to the script currently on my system. I compiled core with it right now and it works fine.

Hi Carlos, indeed it seems they can be downloaded and installed, but on runtime it breaks with

ImportError: dlopen(...Kratos.cpython-314-darwin.so, 0x0002): Library not loaded: 
/opt/homebrew/opt/gcc/lib/gcc/current/libstdc++.6.dylib

Seems to be linked against GCC's standard library. I am trying to make something work with clang++ locally
