How to get the overlay working with a proton wayland session?

It's been possible for a while now to use PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 with GE_Proton 10.x, which is nice for performance and for HDR support.
However, when I start PoE2 with that flag, I can't get EE2 to recognize the game window. Launching without the wayland flag, everything works fine. Unfortunately this is not an option for me, as I crave HDR support.
Did anyone manage to get this to work?
For reference, I'm on Kubuntu 25.04 with mainline kernel 6.14.6, using kisak mesa 25.2.2.
