As expected, the price of EV battery cells continues to fall in China.
Let’s take a look to the average price of EV (Electric Vehicle) and ESS (Energy Storage System) battery cells in China.
EV battery cells (July 2024) LFP (prismatic): 52 euros per kWh NCM 523 (prismatic):61 euros per kWh NCM 523 (pouch):64 euros per kWh ESS battery cells (July 2024) LFP (prismatic): 49 euros per kWh The EV battery cells are optimized for energy and power density, while ESS are mostly about cost, that’s why they are a bit cheaper.

Great information, thank you Pedro! I agree with the your vehicle-category-and-pricing thoughts. It is already happening in China, and will soon be happening everywhere else also. Will Europe join this progress?

I think that Euro carmakers are at least 2 years behind their Chinese counterparts.

Plenty of new electric cars are being launched in China with module-less LFP batteries, while in Europe most electric cars still have NCM batteries with modules.

In 2026 they might start catching up...

I'm curious about the Skoda Epiq though. There's a chance that it'll debut the new LMFP blade batteries from Gotion...

If the European carmakers are only two years behind the Chinese counterpart it's not bad for them: European consumers will need some time to assimilate those new foreign (and Chinese) brands (with some exceptions like Volvo, Polestar, MG, others...)

If they are more than that, they will be in trouble: two years ago talking to colleagues about BEVs only one had a Nissan Leaf and the others laugh at it, but know all say BEVs are there next car or is being considered, and two have bought a BMW i4 and a Tesla Model 3...
