Silently failing after “converting to 720x576”

After I run the command .\pal.exe -720 576 24 5 0 in.ppm out.ppm, the command line spits out:

PAL/CRT v1.2.2 by EMMIR 2018-2023
loaded 3632 2720
converting to 720x576...

and then silently fails without any other messages, or an output file being created.

I’m not a programmer and I’ve never ever complied source code before today, so sorry if this is something that I’ve messed up or misunderstood. I’m a complete newbie here.

Hi, this seems to be a simple issue. There is a space missing between the '-' and the '720' in your list of arguments you give to the exe.
old => .\pal.exe -720 576 24 5 0 in.ppm out.ppm

Oops, I mistyped that while posting the comment itself, not in the command line, so that’s not the issue. It doesn’t matter what arguments I pass after the dash or if I leave it blank, the same thing always happens.

This is very interesting because I just tried this and it worked fine for me. Could you possibly upload your in.ppm and/or how you compiled it?

EDIT: I noticed the image you're giving it is quite large, have you tried something smaller like 1024x720? I did try with an image of size 3632x2720 and it worked fine so I'm wondering if it's a file size thing with Windows (even though we should be well below the threshold).

I tried inputting various images, at various sizes (scaled with FFmpeg), in various pixel formats, and everything resulted in the same kind of error, so I think it’s an issue with the program and not with the input.

I just used a random photo I took as an example, but here it is (full resolution and downscaled) if you’d like to try it yourself.

I tried your images and successfully converted them. How did you compile the program? I don't have access to a Windows machine to be able to test this unfortunately. I can see if one of my friends can try it.

My friend just tested it on their Windows PC and it didn't crash like yours... the last thing that could be an issue that I'd like to check is how you compiled the program.

I compiled it with CMake using default settings, just this:

cmake -B build
cmake --build build

Good news, with the help of @recidivism4ever the issue was found and so now if you clone the latest version of the project and compile it should work!

However, I found that if I run it through CMD instead of Powershell, I instead get a notification saying This app can’t run on your PC — To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher and the console says

My bad. Even while fixing that, it’s still giving me This app can’t run on your PC — To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher when running through CMD.

Powershell has also started giving me this now, which wasn’t there earlier.

You built the exe yourself right? Double check that the exe actually is an exe and not some 0 size file with .exe at the end of it which could possibly happen if something went wrong with building?
