It is absolutely possible. I just did it in an app, but it's not open source yet. But it did take a few weeks to figure out the best way to do it and make everything smooth. So hopefully we'll be able to open source it soon.

Basically the way we did it is to send a message and use useLayoutEffect to immediately measure it and set a "blankSize" in the last message. Then you can scrollToEnd to scroll it to the top of the screen. For even more control we used react-native-keyboard-controller hooks to set contentOffset as an animated prop to scroll it to the top.
