53+
54+
- Future Work
55+
56+
## The Past
57+
58+
With LiaScript, we initially aimed to elevate the creation of OER content to the level of open-source projects, with easy hosting and collaborative authoring teams. We will provide an overview of the past five years and the lessons learned from this journey.
59+
The Present
60+
61+
Our current focus has been on connecting users, creating interactive educational content, and minimizing barriers. We will briefly introduce the latest editor features designed to simplify collaborative creation and distribution of courses. For those unfamiliar, we'll demonstrate the use of classrooms and reveal a hidden gem: how to create dynamic and always up-to-date content with LiaScript scripts.
62+
The Future
63+
64+
Our recent research has been characterized by remote labs - hardware setups accessible and controllable over the internet. We've realized that the concepts of decentralized classrooms, as we experiment with in LiaScript, can be applied to remote labs as well. Conversely, concepts and ideas gleaned from working with remote labs can now be integrated into LiaScript. While LiaScript already allows for creating custom extensions, we will showcase how these can be applied to classrooms too, enabling any conceivable form of collaboration or cooperation within LiaScript classrooms.
65+
66+
We are eagerly looking forward to it and hope you are too!

Thank you once again from our side for the interesting insights into the various projects and initiatives...

We are very pleased to announce that we have finally managed to document all the features and functions of LiaScript. All? Well, let's say 98%. A few things are still secret ;-) or we are still searching for the best possible implementation. To cut a long story short, the interactive version is available here:
25+
26+
https://liascript.github.io/course/?https://raw.githubusercontent.com/liaScript/docs/master/README.md
27+
28+
For those interested, the documentation can also be viewed and experimented with in the LiveEditor:

31+
32+
Yes, it is also possible to reference existing documents so that they can be edited directly. Don't worry, everything happens only in the browser; you won't change the original file. Interestingly, some things randomly emerge from the recombination of LiaScript features. ASCII art pictures can be combined nicely with quizzes, scripts with tables, or macros with links... If anyone finds errors, suggestions for improvement, or optimizations, please feel free to email us or via GitHub:

Recently, we have been focusing more on our OER Remote Labs in Freiberg as part of the CrossLab consortium project. However, documentation and more example labs are still missing, and we are currently working on both. The goal is the same as with LiaScript, but instead of sharing interactive courses, we want to share labs. We have utilized our knowledge gained from developing the LiaScript classroom and applied it to labs. All you need is a browser; the lab configuration and real-time data are transmitted via peer-to-peer technologies. In the following video, André talks about the development of LiaScript and also showcases the current status of our Remote Labs:

We recommend to have a look at the JavaScript part, since we believe that this might be an underrated or hidden gem, that can be used for "data-driven-publishing"
27+
28+
{{< youtube kV152vxjLok >}}
29+
30+
The idea behind this reinterpretation of JavaScript is to allow everyone to inspect not only the data and your findings, but also the code. All tiny scripts whether they are used for calculating or in combination with an input represent a larger execution-graph, if you change one value, all subsequent scripts will be updated too. Just think of this as an Excel-spreadsheet, when you change one cell all the others will be changed too and in LiaScript these cells/calculations are just a native element that you can use to create more interactive and engaging content. However, these calculations are not hidden from the user, by double-clicking onto the result of a script-tag, your users can inspect the code and even modify it. Thus, do not only publish data and findings, but also the algorithms that everyone can explore.
31+
32+
Furthermore, we tried to collect all information into the new LiaScript-website:
33+
34+
https://liascript.github.io
35+
36+
which is build with hugo and Markdown, you can find the sources here:
37+
38+
https://github.com/liaScript/liascript.github.com
39+
40+
Within the next weeks we will try to fill the blog with examples, that we have created and stored in issues on GitHub or in chats, so finding information will be much easier, as we hope...
41+
42+
So everyone is invited, if you want to add a blog-post, showcase your LiaScript project, describe a certain issue/problem/example/finding, feel free to either send us a pull-request for the website or send us an markdown-file and we will add it...
43+
44+
Last but not least, we screwed up with the classroom-feature, we are not sure if the latest Yjs updates or our understanding of their CRDT-implementation broke our neck. But, however we updated the synchronization intensively, removed not working backend-layers and added 3 new services MQTT, torrent, NoStr, which can be used freely to create distributed and open classrooms. This is also why one video from the documentation has not been recorded so far, this is the chapter on surveys and classrooms.
45+
46+
In short, when you open a classroom, you create basically an open chatroom in which your browsers establish a connection and try to synchronize their states, maybe up to 20 persons. These the state of quizzes, surveys, the collaborative editing (this is still a bit glitchy) and a chat, which understands LiaScript and where you can add quizzes, surveys, videos, galleries, code-snippets etc. Where is it stored? Only within your browser, thus when all leave the room their synchronized state will simply vanish ... However, feel free to try this feature, and if you have bug-reports, please open an issue on GitHub or send us a mail...
47+
48+
Till next month ...

## eLearning Africa Conference 2024
22+
23+
We had an amazing time at the eLearning Africa Conference 2024! You can check out our entire workshop here:
24+
25+
https://liascript.github.io/blog/elearning-africa-2024/
26+
27+
The discussions and meetings were incredibly inspiring. One major issue highlighted was the challenge of language barriers in education. After much thought, we found a solution that combines animations with audio and video outputs to minimize these barriers. It’s surprising we didn’t think of this sooner, but now we’re confident this will revolutionize how courses are delivered.
28+
29+
## A Quick Recap
30+
31+
We implemented the audio output feature on our flight back from Africa, while the video feature took a bit longer to finalize. André even presented a virtual contribution at the WeAreDevelopers Conference in Berlin, which summarizes our current work. The circular video cutout was the inspiration behind it! Check out the original pre-contribution here on YouTube:

34+
35+
Feel free to test the classrooms and let us know your thoughts!
36+
37+
To enhance the quick recording of videos and audio, we’ve integrated special functions into the Live-Editor.
38+
39+
https://liascript.github.io/LiveEditor/
40+
41+
We aim to develop this into a full-fledged alternative with a file tree and the ability to upload any files.
42+
43+
### New Features and Enhancements
44+
45+
- Audio Links: Now supporting Spotify, SoundCloud, and Deezer.
46+
- Feature Phone Support: Improved compatibility with phones like Nokia.
47+
- WebTorrent Sharing: Courses can now be shared via WebTorrent. Learn More at https://liascript.github.io/blog/sharing-content-via-webtorrent/
48+
- CPU-Intensive Scripts: Scripts requiring high CPU can be executed in a separate thread using `<script worker="true" ...`.
49+
50+
51+
## Open Textbooks Project
52+
53+
During our visit to Africa, we recognized a significant need for accessible educational materials and textbooks in some countries. To address this, we began porting open textbooks to LiaScript. Although this process can be automated with a crawler, we need co-authors to enhance the content, make it interactive, and translate it. Learn more about this initiative on our blog:
