Serving from a subdirectory doesn't seem to work

tl;dr: it seems APP_DIR is not respected so trying to host from a subdir breaks most of the site.

I have lychee configured thusly:

APP_URL=https://my.domain
APP_DIR=/photos
TRUSTED_PROXIES=*

And an nginx reverse proxy like this:

 location /photos {
      proxy_pass http://private-host:7777/;
      proxy_set_header Host $host;
      proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $remote_addr;
      proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto https;
}

I would expect to be able to access Lychee via https://my.domain/photos but I get the "If you can read me, lychee is misconfigured" error.

Inspecting the page shows that it's trying to load a whole lot of things from / rather than /photos (and hence getting a 404), so it seems APP_DIR is not being respected. An example bad URL is https://my.domain/build/assets/vue-DBVnTurg.js.

Am I missing something, or is this not supported? I see that the docs say "We do not recommend the use of APP_DIR"?

This has been fixed last week (not available on release yet), we need to update the documentation a bit, but you also need to update the ASSET_URL environment property.

This is at this time not available on release, nor on latest. It is available to the git clone users on master and nightly.

Yep, I think the double-slash was a good hint -- changing the nginx location stanza from /photos to /photos/ fixed it, I assume there was some shenanigans there.
