Unable to install Lychee with FTP

Hello, I am currently unable to install the latest version of Lychee on my host. Since I cannot do it via Docker or other means, I downloaded the zip file and uploaded it to a subdomain via FTP using FileZilla.

When I go to the site, I get an error that says, ‘403 This is the root directory and MUST NOT BE PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE. To access Lychee, go here.’ And when I go to ‘.../public/install,’ I get a 404 error. So I go to ‘.../public/installer’ and get a 403 error.

Can you please help me? I can't find a solution to this problem anywhere and it's frustrating me. Please help me.

You probably need to have a look at your APP_DIR and APP_URL.

Also pardon my french, but of all the methods of installing Lychee, you are choosing the worst. :/
By ranking:

1. Docker
2. Zip + ssh on subdomain
3. Zip + ssh on domain + alias path
4. Zip via ftp with base accessible (which is super insecure).

Thank you for your prompt reply. I had no other choice for FTP. It's my only option with my host. Also, I'm a novice when it comes to computers, so I'm not very familiar with IT terms and so on. When you mention APP_URL and APP_DIR, do I need to check .env.example or something else?

Yes, you pretty much need to make a copy of .env.example as .env and update the values. That is where you configure your defaults such as the username and password for the database, etc..
