## What is waffle batter?
40+
41+
Waffle batter is a mixture of wet and dry ingredients that forms the basis for waffles. Waffle batter usually contains eggs, milk, flour, butter, sugar, and a leavening agent like baking soda or baking powder.
42+
43+
To make waffles, waffle batter is poured into a waffle iron or waffle maker and the waffle is cooked into a particular shape. You can serve waffles with sweet toppings such as maple syrup, butter, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, fruits, ice cream, or other sweetened toppings. The pockets in the waffles created by the waffle iron cooking method allow the syrups and toppings to stay on top of the waffle instead of running down the sides.
44+
45+
Knowing what waffle batter is will help you identify the differences between pancake batter. Pancake batter is discussed in the next section.
46+
47+
## What is pancake batter?
48+
49+
Pancake batter is the base from which pancakes are made. Pancakes are also also known as hotcakes, griddle cakes, or flapjacks, though some expects consider them different, distinct objects. A basic pancake batter contains milk, sugar, flour, and baking powder. You can also include eggs and vanilla sugar or additional dry ingredients, such as chocolate chips or blueberries to make specially-flavored pancakes.
50+
51+
To make pancakes, pancake batter is poured onto a hot griddle or frying pan in a circular shape with a flat surface. Depending on the cooking temperature and thickness of the cooking surface, the pancake is flipped to ensure that both sides are cooked. Pancakes are often served with melted butter, maple syrup, and fruit.
52+
53+
The foundational knowledge of both pancake and waffle batters will allow you fully understand the differences between them. These differences are identified in the section below.
54+
55+
## Differences between pancake and waffle batters
56+
57+
Both pancake batter and waffle batter contain the same essential ingredients, but there are critical differences between these breakfast foods.
58+
59+
The list below defines the most important of these differences:
60+
61+
- **Ratios**
62+
63+
Waffle batter contains more sugar, butter, and eggs than pancake batter, making it a richer batter with higher fat content. Pancake batter contains more milk than waffle batter.
64+
65+
- **Texture**
66+
67+
The best waffles are fluffy on the inside with a crispy exterior. The extra sugar in the waffle batter caramelizes and gives the waffles a golden brown exterior. The extra fat content produces a crisp exterior and prevents the waffle from sticking to the waffle iron. (Belgian waffle recipes contain pearl sugar, which creates an even crispier exterior than traditional waffles.) Pancakes are also browned, but the low amount of sugar and a higher volume of milk in the batter makes cake-like pancakes that are soft and floppy.
68+
69+
- **Leavening agent**
70+
71+
Most waffle batters contain baking powder or baking soda to achieve a fluffy interior. American pancake recipes also contain leavening agents, but pancakes in the United Kingdom tend to be flatter and resemble crêpes.
72+
73+
- **Consistency**
74+
75+
Waffle batter is thicker than pancake batter. This thick consistency lets you pour the waffle batter into a waffle maker without running out the sides. Pancake batter is looser, which means it is easily pourable into a round shape.

Waffles rank highly on many Americans' list of favorite breakfast foods. Waffles are usually moist, occasionally slightly sweet, and most importantly, warm.
31+
32+
However, Oma only made waffles as a cake-like dessert in her heart-shaped waffle iron. Her waffles were great fresh, but also delicious when dried out and dunked in coffee. Our Tante Elise would whip these up when unexpected guests dropped by for Kaffee und Kuchen in the afternoon. Her callers could devour the first batch while the remainder baked in the waffle iron because they were both quicker and easier than Butterkuchen or Bienenstich.
33+
34+
This article guides you through the construction of Oma's waffles. After completing this how-to, you'll be able to experiment on your own to gain additional experience. You may also choose to continue providing simple waffles to friends and family.

## Prepare the batter
60+
61+
The first step to making Haushaltswaffeln is the preparation of the batter. To prepare the batter, complete the steps listed below.
62+
63+
1. Separate the eggs with an egg separator.
64+
1. Using a handheld mixer beat the egg whites until stiff.
65+
1. In a separate bowl add the egg yolks, sugar, grated lemon peel and vanilla sugar or vanilla extract and mix until creamy.
66+
1. Slowly add the butter to the egg mixture and beat until smooth.
67+
1. Mix the flour with baking powder and sift it into a bowl.
68+
1. Alternate between flour and lukewarm milk and add these ingredients into the egg mixture.
69+
1. Fold in the beaten egg whites using a pastry blender.
70+
71+
After the batter is prepared, you can begin baking the batter into the tasty Haushaltswaffeln.
72+
73+
## Cook the batter
74+
75+
In this section, you will cook the batter prepared in the previous section, resulting in a batch of warm and delicious Haushaltswaffeln.
76+
77+
Use the steps below to create your first batch.
78+
79+
1. Heat up a waffle maker.
80+
1. Fill about ½ cup of batter in the waffle maker.
81+
1. Close the waffle maker and bake the waffles until golden and crisp.
82+
83+
After the Haushaltswaffeln are cooked to perfection, it's time to serve your guests. This process is described in the next section.
84+
85+
## Serve the Haushaltswaffeln
86+
87+
Although you can dress Haushaltswaffeln up with a sprinkling of powdered sugar, they really need no embellishment. The flavour is rich and buttery, and they are nicely sweetened. You can give your callers the option to sprinkle some powdered sugar over the Haushaltswaffeln, or add whipped cream and fruit.
