# How a reservation discount is applied to Azure SQL Edge
14+
15+
After you buy Azure SQL Edge reserved capacity, the reservation discount is automatically applied to SQL Edge deployed to edge devices that match the attributes and quantity of the reservation. A reservation applies to the future use of Azure SQL Edge deployments. You're charged for software, storage, and networking at the normal rates.
16+
17+
## How reservation discount is applied
18+
19+
A reservation discount is "_use-it-or-lose-it_". So, if you don't have matching resources for any month, then you lose a reservation quantity for that month. You can't carry forward unused reserved months.
20+
21+
When you shut down a resource, the reservation discount automatically applies to another matching resource in the specified scope. If no matching resources are found in the specified scope, then the reserved months are _lost_.
22+
23+
Stopped resources are billed and continue to use reservation hours. Deallocate or delete resources or scale-in other resources to use your available reservation months with other workloads.
24+
25+
## Discount applied to deployed devices
26+
27+
The reserved capacity discount is applied to deployed devices monthly. The reservation that you buy is matched to the usage emitted by the deployed device. For devices that don't run the full month, the reservation is automatically applied to other deployed devices matching the reservation attributes. The discount can apply to deployed devices that are running concurrently. If you don't have deployed devices that run for the full month that match the reservation attributes, you don't get the full benefit of the reservation discount for that month.
28+
29+
If your number of devices deployed exceeds your reservation quantity, then you're charged the non-discounted cost for the number beyond the reservation quantity.
30+
31+

# Prepay for Azure SQL Edge reservations
14+
15+
When you prepay for your SQL Edge reserved capacity, you can save money over your pay-as-you-go costs. With reserved capacity, you make a commitment for SQL Edge device use for a period of one or three years to get a significant discount on usage costs. The discounts only apply to SQL Edge deployed devices and not on other software or other container usage. The reservation discount is applied automatically to the deployed devices in the selected reservation scope. Because of this automatic application, you don't need to assign a reservation to a specific deployed device to get the discounts.
16+
17+
You can buy SQL Edge reserved capacity from the [Azure portal](https://portal.azure.com/). Pay for the reservation [up front or with monthly payments](prepare-buy-reservation.md). To buy reserved capacity:
18+
19+
- You must be in the Owner role for at least one Enterprise or individual subscription with pay-as-you-go rates.
20+
- For Enterprise subscriptions, **Add Reserved Instances** must be enabled in the [EA portal](https://ea.azure.com/). Or, if that setting is disabled, you must be an EA Admin on the subscription.
21+
- For the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program, only admin agents or sales agents can buy SQL Edge reserved capacity.
22+
23+
## Buy a software plan
24+
25+
1. Sign in to the [Azure portal](https://portal.azure.com/).
26+
2. Select **All services** > **Reservations**.
27+
3. Select **Add** and then in the **Purchase Reservations** pane, select **Azure SQL Edge**.
28+
4. Select a scope. The reservation's scope can cover one subscription or multiple subscriptions (shared scope):
29+
- **Shared** - The reservation discount is applied to SQL Edge devices running in any subscriptions within your billing context. For enterprise customers, the shared scope is the enrollment and includes all subscriptions within the enrollment. For Pay-As-You-Go customers, the shared scope is all Pay-As-You-Go subscriptions created by the account administrator.
30+
- **Management Group** - The reservation discount is applied to the matching resource in the list of subscriptions that are a part of both the management group and billing scope.
31+
- **Single subscription** - The reservation discount is applied to the SQL Edge devices in this subscription.
32+
- **Single resource group** - The reservation discount is applied to the SQL Edge devices in the selected subscription and the selected resource group within that subscription.
33+
5. Select a **Subscription**. The subscription used to pay for the capacity reservation. The subscription payment method is charged the upfront costs for the reservation.
34+
- For an enterprise subscription, the charges are deducted from the enrollment's Azure Prepayment (previously called monetary commitment) balance or charged as overage.
35+
- For an individual subscription with pay-as-you-go pricing, the charges are billed to the subscription's credit card or invoice payment method.
36+
6. Select a **Region**. The Azure region that's covered by the capacity reservation.
37+
7. Select the **Billing frequency**. It indicates how often the account is billed for the reservation. Options include _Monthly_ or _Upfront_.
38+
8. Select a **Term**. One year or three years.
39+
9. Add the product to the cart.
40+
10. Choose a quantity, which is the number of prepaid SQL Edge deployments that can get the billing discount.
41+
11. Review your selections and purchase.
42+
43+
## Cancel, exchange, or refund reservations
44+
45+
You can cancel, exchange, or refund reservations with certain limitations. For more information, see [Self-service exchanges and refunds for Azure Reservations](exchange-and-refund-azure-reservations.md).
