Effect of booms and skimmers in py_gnome/gnome/weatherers/roc.py

Hi,

I am currently formulating a response mechanism based on a historical event.
As part of this, I need to deploy perimeter booms, J-shaped booms, and skimmers off the coast.
I request your support or a simplified script that I can integrate into PyGnome and ADIOS DB.
In the model map, is a landmass or a barrier necessary to simulate boom-like structures?
Also, does roc.py account for containment by booms and recovery by skimmers?
Specifically, can it compute the retained mass and recovered mass, and exclude them from further computation in subsequent time steps?

Sorry for the slow response -- lots going in here at NOAA ....

ROC does simulate skimmers, but it's really designed to be used by itself, without a full transport simulation -- that is, it assumes it's all one big slick.

If you simply want to remove oil from the simulation due to skimming, you can use the features in:

gnome.weatherers.cleanup.py

See how they work by looking at the "response options" section in "weathering only" mode in WebGNOME:

But these are pretty simple -- still only considering the whole mass balance of a single slick.

But if you want:

then you will want to remove oil via skimmers from particular locations.

For that you'll need to write some custom code. Essentially a new "weatherer" -- that will remove particular particles (or their mass) according to their location.

I'm afraid this isn't well documented, but you can start by looking at the

Weatherer base class in gnome/weatherers/core.py

Essentially, you'll need to implement weather_elements method -- it gets a "spill container" passed in that contains all the data associated with the model run -- so you can alter that however you need to.
