Video player can be used to open audio files

I followed the steps in the documentation for opening a local file in the video player, but I selected a .wav file instead of a video file just to see what would happen. No errors occurred, and the video player opened with a blank screen. I left it open for a while and still no errors occurred. Closing the video player also did not result in any errors. It's good that it didn't crash anything, but I expected it to display some sort of error message when I selected a non-video file.
