Matrix link on homepage does not work (for me)

I was looking for a chat room to bother people with my occasional Newbie questions 😀 and stumbled upon the link to https://matrix.to/#/#space:nixos.org on the footer of https://nixos.org, which was apparently introduced in #710, but stupidely clicking on that today doesn't work, for me... it says

#space:nixos.org can't be previewed. Do you want to join it? [Join the discussion]

so I click that, but then it fails with:

Failed to join - There was an error joining."

Perhaps a recent https://app.element.io UI update broke this somehow?

How do I join that room - what Matrix server is it on? Isn't that missing in the link?

I created such a link for my own project the other day (see https://docs.enola.dev/chat, just for reference) and made it https://matrix.to/#/#enola.dev:matrix.org ... should this one be something like that? (I gather you want to link to your full "space" not just a "room", but is that the right syntax? Without server name?)

OK, so links like https://matrix.to/#/#nixcon:nixos.org or https://matrix.to/#/#marketing:nixos.org work.

And AFTER I manually added nixos.org to my Servers on https://app.element.io, I am now seeing all of its many rooms.

And I was able to discover the https://app.element.io/#/room/#space:nixos.org

And from there I was now able to join e.g. https://matrix.to/#/#users:nixos.org

So now the question is just what the correct https://matrix.to URL syntax is for opening the "space" named NixOS is...

Oh, I actually looked into this for my own project in enola-dev/enola#1649 (comment), and had found:

• https://matrix.to/#/#enola-dev:matrix.org my Space
• https://matrix.to/#/#enola.dev:matrix.org my primary Room

Ergo you would think that ... probably https://matrix.to/#/#NixOS:nixos.org should work?

But it does not, because that goes to https://app.element.io/#/room/#NixOS:nixos.org, and #NixOS:nixos.org does not exist.

It should go to https://app.element.io/#/room/#space:nixos.org. Which you would think should be.. what, https://matrix.to/#/#space:nixos.org, logically? And that's what you have currently (see above). But it's broken (for me, as is, today; perhaps it used to work in the past, and some recent Matrix change broke it).

This might not actually be a Nix website issue, but an "upstream issue" - broken in the https://matrix.to "redirector" thingie?

matrix-org/matrix.to#393 now created, but it's a red herring... see matrix-org/matrix.to#394.

I've now learnt that (quote) "a space is a room, so there's no difference", and that the "welcome space" of the nixos.org matrix server is literally called space (it's not a keyword; that confused me, at first).

So https://matrix.to/#/#space:nixos.org should work. And it does for me AFTER I manually added the nixos.org server to my https://app.element.io client. But after deleting the nixos.org from the list of servers in my https://app.element.io UI, and right-click to Leave the Space and all its Rooms, then I can still (again) reliably reproduce that (initial) "Failed to join - There was an error joining."

I'll see if I can make some sort of screencast or something - and perhaps also provide Browser console logs.

Aha! This problem is due to element-hq/element-web#30954.

That's marked resolved, but probably hasn't rolled out, yet.

I suggest to keep this open to re-verify that when it has.
