Bluetooth audio devices connect but won't play audio

Not sure what the underlying problem is but when I connect my Bluetooth headphones (JLab JBuds Lux ANC) or Bluetooth speaker to the iPod it doesn't play sound through them. The button to change the audio source doesn't appear either.

I had a similar problem with my AirPods Pro 2, but wrote it off to them being too new

But now I tested the same headphones with iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.0 and iPod touch 3 running 5.1.1, and they actually can play

I will look into it
