Are styles.yml and custom-class compatible?

I know I can define a custom style for a span (I'm using djot) with this syntax: [Pillow]{custom-style="strong"} and this works as expected, giving

but adding a custom style in my project's styles.yml like this

and trying to use that with [Pillow]{custom-style="software"} doesn't work as expected

I understand the custom-style argument can also be mapped to a SILE command but I thought it happens only if a Resilient style doesn't exist?

How is named your main document and how did you compile it.

If you went for a master file, say mymaster.silm, and uses the (by default) "resilient.book" class, then the style file is mymaster-styles.yml (which on first run contains all generated styles, edit it, add your own styles and re-run) -- Just re-checked right now, no issue on my side.

If you went for a direct file (Djot or Markdown), then it depends on which command you invoked.
Say mydoc.dj for instance, compiled with sile -u inputters.djot -c resilient.book mydoc.dj then the generated style file is mydoc-styles.yml and likewise, adding your own styles and re-running the command just works too -- Also checked.

So either

• You didn't add your styles to the correct file.
• Or your are not using the resilient.book document class.

In case of doubt, you can add -d resilient.styles to your command line, for verbose style-related logs.

(Your understanding afterwards is correct, if there's no resilient style by the said name but a SILE command exists, the latter will be invoked. But I don't really recommend that route, it's mostly for programming extensions and handle special cases).

I got this structure:

src/
    gfxbook.silm
    gfxbook-styles.yml
    chapters
        something.dj
out/
    gfxbook.pdf

I invoke sile by

cd src
sile -u inputters.silm gfxbook.silm -o ../out/gfxbook.pdf

The style file was auto-generated and it looks like this (renamed to .txt so I could upload it):
gfxbook-styles.yml.txt

So to me it looks like the styles are in the right file and I'm using the resilient.book document class.

Oh and about "running a first time, extending the style file, then re-running..."
Of course, one can also create manually the style file before (with the approriate xxx-styles.yml name!), with some custom styles in it, and just run SILE once. The style file will just be updated with all default styles, keeping the custom ones. This also works (and I sometimes do it too).

It is, and everything looks correct.

But just noticed, weight 400 is "normal"
Maybe you meant 700 ("bold") ;)

OK I found the issue: weight: 400 is not bold. Adding red color shows that it renders fine

Thank you for your help debugging this. The -d flag is good to know. With a Lua AST filter I managed to write, I think I can get a pretty comfortable styling system for my book :)
