[Bug]: Installing nuget is giving an error on Windows from Visual Studio (Due to missing LongPathsEnabled)

What happened?

I am trying to install the nuget 5.2.2 in a simple MAUI app.

I though it was a MAX_PATH issue from windows so I tried ( it worked with other nuget ) to create a subst Y: with the path of the project to reduce the risk,.... but nothing.... can you please give a hand on this? thank you!

Open a new MAUI app try to install the OneSignalSDK.DotNet you get the error.

What I have tested

I created a new ".NET MAUI App" project from VS Code 1.104.2 ( w/ the .NET MAUIextension 1.10.18) on macOS 15.6.1 (24G90).
This created a project that resulted in <TargetFrameworks>net8.0-android;net8.0-ios;net8.0-maccatalyst</TargetFrameworks>.

I was able to built and run the app on both iOS and Android devices and get OneSignal push notifications and In-App Messages.

Confirming the file is present

I looked at the OneSignalSDK.DotNet/5.2.2 package and I see the file res\ios\OneSignalLiveActivities.xcframework\ios-x86_64-maccatalyst\OneSignalLiveActivities.framework\Versions\Current\Modules\OneSignalLiveActivities.swiftmodule\x86_64-apple-ios-macabi.private.swiftinterface from your error message:

1. Do you get this error after running dotnet restore?

HEllo! I have all that directories, and I have the file the error says, but I think this is the same error about the MAX_PATH of 256 chars.... that file has 259....

I am using VS community last version, if I isntall the 5.2.1 has the same error...

Ensure your project's bin and obj folders are not the issue

Your project's bin and obj directories are not cleaned up on clean builds, you must delete them manually to ensure everything is clean.

1. Close project
2. Manually delete all bin and obj directories in the project
3. Add OneSignal SDK from PowerShell with dotnet add package OneSignalSDK.DotNet
4. Open project again.

Issue - Windows Only

There are two parts the long path issues that only happens on Windows (even 11):

1. Windows does not support long paths (over 260) by default on some of it's APIs.
2. Visual Studio it self still does not support long paths when adding or restoring nuget packages, even when Window's LongPathsEnabled is enabled.

Solution

1. Turn on LongPathsEnabled per Microsoft's guide:

• Make sure to reboot after setting

2. Always use dotnet restore from a terminal when you need to do a fresh build of your project.

Follow up

Recommend you also reach out to Microsoft's Visual Studio team that this long path issue is affecting you so they know this is an import issue to their community.

Other workarounds

All work arounds on Windows require LongPathsEnabled first.

1. On Windows, use a shared path
2. On Windows, use VSCode instead of Visual Studio. (possible work around, not verified)
