## Stepping Back From GSoC – For Now

Development of the MSS project began in depth on Bitbucket in 2014, launching a period of
collaborative software development. In 2016, we significantly increased accessibility and usability
by releasing version 1.2.1 via conda-forge for the scientific community.

A highlight was our first participation in Google Summer of Code (GSoC) in 2019 under the [Python Umbrella](https://python-gsoc.org/).
Over the next seven years, GSoC allowed us to mentor dedicated students,
providing them with valuable practical experience and helping launch their careers.
Their contributions were vital to MSS’s development, bringing fresh skills and perspectives to the project. We
transitioned our development process from Bitbucket to GitHub in 2020.

In 2021, we redesigned the user interface to improve usability and efficiency,
receiving positive feedback from long-term users and broadening acceptance of the tool. In 2022,
we published a [paper](https://gmd.copernicus.org/articles/15/8983/2022/) detailing MSS’s successful use in a challenging measurement campaign,
demonstrating its value for scientific planning and execution.

For the 2026 [GSoC](https://summerofcode.withgoogle.com/) cycle, we've decided to take a break.
We see this as an opportunity to consolidate our efforts and hope to return to GSoC in the future.

For over a decade, MSS has been a trusted tool within the scientific community. Ongoing development and the
involvement of emerging scientists will ensure its continued relevance and allow us to tackle increasingly complex research questions.
We are optimistic about the future and excited to continue developing MSS and expanding its applications.
