Today there are both books and at least SW snippets that are authored by GenAI and I believe that the copyrights of those are still under some legal discussion and court cases. I'm not sure if it makes sense to bring GenAI up in this training course or not, but it definitely is a hot topic at the moment.

Likely it could make sense to mention GenAI and say what is the current understanding of GenAI generated content copyrights and when we get more clarity on that update this training accordingly.

good point. How about adding something (somewhere in the intro) like:

Note: Code can be created by genAI systems. The legal situation with respect to Copyright of generated code is currently unclear and is not covered by this course.

We need talk more about this topic, but it really needs legal experts to provide insight. We have a webinar happening December 4th from vendors. We do not have lawyers talking about the current model activity. We need to do that. Perhaps a special education webinar?

@shanecoughlan I think it's too early for us to say anything definitive as OpenChain. Therefore we should rule it out of scope for now, at least for this course. The question is then whether we mention it is out of scope or just ignore it. I would prefer to mention it. If we can agree on text like the above at the next call we can include it this update round otherwise I suggest we defer to the next round, whenever that will be.

Perhaps this:

"There are open discussions about the copyright of code generated by AI. These discussions will be informed by multiple legal jurisdictions and to the best of our current knowledge are still underway across the world. Due to a lack of clear industry consensus and guidance, it is premature for commentary in educational material produced by the OpenChain Project."
