I just got an email from PayPal saying I'm using an outdated version of PayPal on my store. Any support for the new PayPal APIs?

I'm using OpenMage 20.12.0.

Am I correct in guessing that PayPal wants to add all its other payment types to our checkout and not just point out our "outdated" version? Perhaps I'm just being cynical? :-)

IMHO you're not far from the truth.

They are referring to the new checkout, which they call "advanced / expanded", and it also comes with better fees and financial terms.

We were considering implementing it for several clients, but the costs are high.

If we can gather some funds, we can go ahead with the implementation — also because I imagine the old APIs will eventually be deprecated.

In my experience, there's a big issue with this old implementation which they say it's solved with the new API. The issue is sometimes PayPal Express Checkout allows payment only for PayPal users requiring login or registration. It's not possible to pay with the card as not PayPal user. As I said, it happens now and then. PayPal support said I should move to the API v2 in order to avoid this issue.

PayPal has just sent the same notification to all of my Magento 1.x / OpenMage stores, advising us to migrate to the new Bold Commerce integration.
Since PayPal was previously bundled with Magento/OpenMage, I’m reluctant to rely on a third-party plugin for a simple payment, especially in light of Bold Commerce’s Trustpilot ratings (https://www.trustpilot.com/review/boldcommerce.com).

Could the OpenMage core team or community (@colinmollenhour @addison74 @Flyingmana) share any official guidance?

• If we continue using the built-in PayPal code what specific features (if any) will we lose?
• Is it needed an in-house replacement?
• Is there an endorsed alternative to the Bold Commerce module?

I can share our experience: I attempted to install and configure Bold Checkout for my client to enable the new PayPal checkout, but it didn't work. I've contacted their technical support and am currently awaiting their response.

In our company, we used our own PayPal lib because we need some extra logic with the payment methods.
So i don't know if I'm able to help much there?

Umm.. Curious. We are still running a Magento 1.9.0.1 store using Paypal for checkout and table rates instead of UPS. I just fired up LTS 20.15 to look at starting a new store and also porting over our old store from 1.9.0.1.

Hard to pin down accurate info because of the docs being thin or all over the place. SOme questions for anyone who knows the answers;

1. UPS was updated to OAuTH in LTS and I assume it works ok. Yes/No
2. Paypal still works fine on our old 1.9.01 site and we have not had any warnings from paypal. Is there a real issue? Are they going to change something so paypal ceases to work in 1.9.01 , like UPS did? Has paypal ceased working for people in LTS 20.15?

Looking at Opencart to move over to, but you need to buy every plugin, and it appears slow. Magento 2.4 is just a huge dog....

Nobody has replied to this topic since MAY, so am I wasting my time with LTS? @colinmollenhour Is it broken? Your literally just down the road from me.

The new UPS API was implemented in 20.7.0. It is working.

Paypal will shutdown the old API. As new merchant it is not possible to get access to the legacy API since 2 years.
PayPal has not yet specified a binding deadline for the use of API v1. There is only a clear recommendation to switch to new API, but no specific date for the shutdown. Maybe the EOL will depend on the number of users using the legacy API?
Iways_PaypalPlus uses also the old legacy API. When Paypal shuts down the legacy API PaypalPLus will also stop working.

We have an internal ticket to test the new implementation of the paypal API, but haven't had time yet to test it.
Because the old API is still working and there is no EOL date, there is some time for us to finish the work.
