Settings for dimming the screen/OLED display

Since many controllers are using an OLED display which is prone to burn-in it would be great if it was possible to dim the screen to reduce the burn-in rate. It would also be better for playing in a dark room since the display can get a bit bright.

Maybe a display dimming setting in the web config, and possibility to map buttons or shortcuts to screen brightness up/down, and even a screen toggle off/on, as well as a setting in the mini display menu.

I can contribute by testing firmware on my Haute42 Ultra M gen 2 device.

Hi @knowsshit,

If you do leave your unit plugged in for an extended period of time I would recommend checking out the Display Saver Mode feature we have. It will allow you to set an amount of time in minutes before the screen goes off. It will then turn back on on the next registered input.

Regarding brightness on the OLED, most of the commonly used OLED modules for builds running on GP2040-CE do not support a dimming feature or greyscale, they are simple on/off monochrome OLED displays.

There is a possibility of doing dimming on the firmware end with black frame insertion, but I am unsure if this would be possible within the project.

As a side note, the Haute42|COSMOX M Ultra Gen 2 uses a new sized screen that is blue, unlike the other screens used on previous Haute42|COSMOX devices.

Thanks for quick reply! have already enabled the Display Saver (which maybe should have be on by default?)

If there is no brightness support in hardware I understand that it is not easy to implement and that doing black frame insertion might be a too heavy to implement.

A mappable "toggle display on/off" function would be welcome, though.

Vendors are free to set the configurations that they would like for their devices by default. So far Haute42|COSMOX has not expressed interest in having the Display Saver on by default. If you are on their Discord server they have a feedback channel where you can post about this. If anyone from Haute42|COSMOX reaches out with a request for the change we can make it.

A toggle for display on/off though the Hotkey section may be possible and we can consider it for a future release.

I have a use case for something similar (controller with build in LED screen)
I've looked at your LED PWM for this since most displays use a PWM signal for brightness controll of LED backlight.
