Was there ever a need for distributed queue on etcd?

I see workflow management systems like Argo out there that hold the work queue data on ETCD. Then I find this repo that seems dead. I'm very curious, do you think there was ever a need for a ETCD based queue? I'm trying to decide whether to use ETCD as a queue or go with something else.
