do you guys recommend java 25 for paper? its faster than java 21 and seems to work from my preliminary testing

We recommend using tested LTS versions, 25 should be fine, but you would need to test within your own setup

It should be fine, you're unlikely to come across any bugs. If you do either it's a regression in Java 22-25, or it's an intentional change that Paper should probably be aware about because Mojang will probably update to Java 25 anyway within the next year or so.

From my testing java 25 has half process CPU usage (maybe a change to how its measured, idk seems crazy) MSPT seems same between java 21 and 25, but enabling compact object headers seems to give a tiny performance boost, maybe 2-5% although there are so many variables to account for.

The new AOT profiling is very good, reduces server boot time from ~25 seconds to ~18 seconds, that is when recording a full server start up, I will test how much a generic paper AOT reduces it (no plugins), if its significant maybe in the build pipeline you could generate AOT file for paper?

Paper possibly can't provide a pre-generated AOT file due to the Minecraft EULA, I don't know, it depends on what's in there.

Ignoring that: they shouldn't anyway. AOT works fine with plugins, so servers can see further increase by generating it themselves, as it would include all their plugins too.

AOT doesn't contain any code, just profiling data, sharing a spark report isn't against Minecraft eula

Perhaps, I don't know, I haven't checked.

Besides, that's what it contains right now. Project Layden intends to continue to expand the capabilities of AOT Caching to include more data; eventually to include AOT Code Compilation, which would definitely be a EULA violation.

The paperclip jar binary-patches the Vanilla jar, meaning in the event of Paper including the AOT-relevant file(s), it would simple just be more bytes in a paperclip jar which you cannot really extract, meaning it wouldn't break the EULA, just like the current paperclip jar doesn't.

Without players the server does very little anyways, I don't think that this is worth it to the build pipeline, and I don't think it's worth the engineering effort and build time increases that would be required to generate something actually remotely useful
