Can't select any of the .img's using WinDiskWriter

Hello,

When attempting to create a bootable USB for macOS, the .img files are grayed out while using "WinDiskWriter".

I can select the .iso files, but then an error is produced, but I wanted to see or test if there was an issue on my end.

Please advise.

Can you try using the latest ShredOS https://github.com/PartialVolume/shredos.x86_64/releases/tag/v2025.11_28_x86-64_0.40

I just booted the .iso shredos v2025.11_28_x86-64_v0.40 on my Mac book pro (16GB RAM). If you've
never done this before there are a couple of things that differ from a PC.

To boot from USB

Power on and when it sounds the tone, hold down the option/alt key until the device appears for selection

Double the font size - nwipe main screen

Once booted and nwipe has appeared, because of the high resolution screen the text will be tiny. Press the 'f' key in nwipe to double the size of the font.

Switching terminals

fn + ctrl + option + F2 to switch to the second virtual terminal.
fn + ctrl + option + F1 to switch back to nwipe's terminal.

Double font size in a terminal

In a virtual terminal you will also find the text is tiny. Type setfont -d to double the size of the font.

One other thing. If you want ShredOS to write the PDF back to the USB flash drive you booted from, then you will either need to use a .img or one of the .iso files that says plus partition in it's filename such as this one:

To be honest, if you are trying to create a ShredOS USB drive on a MAC, i'd probably just plug in the flash drive you want to write to and use dd. But that's just me.

# to figure out which drive is the flash drive on a MAC..
diskutil list

# burn the image to the flash drive, change sdx to whatever the device name of your flash drive is.
sudo dd if=shredos-2025.11_28_x86-64_v0.40_20260204_plus-partition.iso   of=/dev/sdx

dd is dangerous if you get the drive wrong, you could end up overwriting you main drive, so extreme caution is necessary, be sure you know which drive is which.

disclaimer: I don't use MAC OS so double check any advice I give you.

In regards to WinDiskWriter, it looks like it rewrites all the boot loaders, so I've no idea if it will work or not. Alternatively use dd or Ventoy or any other device writer that will just write blocks from a ShredOS .iso or .img file to a device.

Balena Etcher also usually works well and seems to have a Mac version. YMMV.
