Missing definition for IO_REG_TYPE for ATmega2560

I am using platformio and I can only compile successfully by using

-DIO_REG_TYPE=uint8_t

Otherwise I get:

.pio/libdeps/ATmega2560/Encoder/Encoder.h:66:11: error: 'IO_REG_TYPE' does not name a type
