Debugging on the Esp-32 and Mesmerizer board

I recently figured out how to enable JTAG debugging on the Mesmerizer board. You need to install jumpers across the following pins labeled on the board:

Are there any other debugging tips and/or tricks this community could benefit from concerning debugging on ESP-32 boards?

Such as...
Is JTAG the best method for debugging?
What about the different debugging tools (esp-prog)?
What experiences have you had either good or bad?
