How do I install iris into the launcher?

I want to move to Prism Launcher from the original Mojang one, and use the already downloaded files from that original launcher. I'm of the opinion that if I've already downloaded a given version, then downloading it again makes no sense. I have tried copying files from the original installation, to the instance folder generated when I add an instance, and when I attempt to run that instance, I expect it to run right away, and absolutely no downloading to happen, since it is not necessary. However, the launcher seems to start downloading many things when I try to run the instance, so I abort that, because I don't want it to redownload anything at all of what I already have. Please help fill me in. What is the import procedure? If it makes any difference, I use the Java edition, on Linux.
