Dominance of waste CHP plants in district heating mixes

Describe the Issue

The district heating supply mix is dominated by waste CHP plants that burn the non-sequestered HVC from naphtha production. This result was obtained using the default pypsa-de configuration (without biogenic municipal solid waste, but waste_to_energy turned to true) at a 9h-resolution & 27-cluster-resolution for "KN2045_Bal_v4".

The waste sector is not modeled very detailed at the moment. Before my last change it used to be 0. Here I explain how I chose the config for the waste sector and why everything is from HVC (and none from municipal solid waste) PyPSA/pypsa-ariadne#292

Taken together waste and biomass account for 30% of AGFW balance, versus 45% of our balance, i think that's okay-ish, but any improvement would of course be welcome.

On the other hands your pie chart also reveals that we have too much coal and too little gas. Maybe another thing to keep in mind when attempting to improve the DH balance

I agree that the most striking difference lies in the difference in contributions of gas and coal. When I validated the district heating supply mix a year ago, the proportions could be fixed by introducing unit commitment for the coal plants.

Regarding the waste incineration it might be worth, modeling the co-use of non-sequestered HVC and municipal solid waste as waste sources, since the latter one is now available in pypsa-de.
