Why does QL4 try to establish network connections after an install?

I've used QL for many years and all of a sudden within five minutes after a completely new/clean install:
"QL4: could not create SSL/TLS secure channel" dialogs start popping up.

I've never set any option to check for updates. Never had an "update available" message ever since I've been using QL. Why did this change? If it is checking for updates without explicit user permission this should be an option as no unapproved communication should occur from any application. This will eliminate QL as a deployed option for many organizations (and individuals)

This feature has always existed, but QL has not released version updates for many years.
