Multiple Bayed Racks

Problem

Visualize touring racks that are double or triple wide (2x12U, 3x20U)

Proposed solution

Instead of having FRONT and BACK displayed next to each other, when having multiple bay racks have them stacked. FRONT on top with Bays 1, 2, 3 (and so on) left to right. On bottom have REAR with bays 3, 2, 1 left to right.

Hey @JawlyRoger thanks for submitting this idea. I personally don't have much experience in the touring music scene. Can you help me understand what this physically looks like? It might help to diagram it out so we are on the same page.

Is this the sort of thing you are intending to visualize? It would totally be possible I am just wanting to make sure we are aligned before defining this as any feature work.

Quick mockup. The way I will end up using it wouldnt actually be showing most units rear, would be covered with panels, doors, brushes. But this should show explain it.

I see, that makes sense. And for your purposes are you mainly concerned with the locations of equipment, what capacity you have in each rack and what goes where. Is that accurate?

I am wondering if the interconnected cabling is something worth considering. To me that would be a phase 2/3 though I can imagine there is value there.

ya gotcha, I am glad clarified. Though to what I think you were also inferring I was asking, I imagine you might have bays of varying sizes. what is the smallest reasonable size for a bayed unit, like 10U? and what would be the largest reasonable size?

Double units that are 10, 12, 14, 16, 20 and 24, triple are just 24, but I assume it would be dynamic so you're not doing it just for my specific use case.

Yeah, it will have options. My intention is to include a bayed unit mode with various presets, such as 2x or 3x and 10-24U. However, knowing now that triples are always 24U is helpful. Is that typical in the industry? It’s a tricky question, as musicians may have their own unique approaches. Ultimately, I want to understand the need (yours and the broader industry) well enough to create a simple, easily presentable solution.

great work on this, and the discussion here, is multi rack in production yet? I was just trying the https://count.racku.la/ as a preview, and don't see how to create a few side by side racks.

Not yet! it is live in dev (https://d.racku.la) but there are a number of issues that I have yet to work out before making it live in prod

ok, cool, I run a few facilities with mult-rack rooms some 3/4 some 10+, (they are often 42U also) so love that idea! thank you.

interesting! so to clarify, these are separate 42U racks all in a big ol row? or are you talking about like a more AV-style bayed rack? I am assuming these are data center style facilities right?

I use both, sorry to be greedy. Some times AV style just a few racks and home labs, then datacenter long rows of large racks, I just love your concept as I love avoiding drawing like CAD, and like drag and drop, with CSV/Excel... cheers!

hah not greedy at all. I view them as similar concepts, enough so that they are essentially the same but with different grouping. Though that makes me wonder: for you, are bayed racks (e.g. combined units) ever taller than 24U?

We the moment I say bayed racks are 24U or smaller, someone will ask for larger, but sounds like a great starting point, as most bayed ones I think of are 24 ish or less, and datacenters are of course 42 or 48...
