Fair question. It all started when I believe one of the libraries requires it (it doesn't exist in AndroidManifest, but shows in the APK file, that is why I assumed it was most likely added by a library. Though I did not know which one), so I had to exclude that permission manually from the AndroidManifest. This has been discussed before.

Now however, and since the introduction of check for update feature (ab92318), those permissions are needed to check for new updates.

Looking at the code history, the permission did appear after the major refactor that I did, and that seems to be a remanent of me testing the FTP feature (yes, I did implement a half-baked FTP feature, and it was working very well! this is why I stated in the v1.3.0 changelog that the file system is now capable of handling network storages, It just need some time to be implemented properly).

Glad to hear about the FTP mounts. Ik it's probably going to be long down the road and even IF; but how do we stand on WebDAV support? Like client and server both

Never actually checked how WebDAV works and how it is used, I will assume it isn't different than org.apache.commons.net.ftp. I'll check before I implement it though to find the best option.

Oh I didn't propose it vs FTP, but alongside it. Imagine a chad file explorer which supports oh idk EVERY SINGLE protocol xD jk

WebDAV works on top of HTTP and introduces some new methods. It has auth, HTTP doesn't. Auth is because it can give write access to the remote server for managing files as the client pleases, unlike HTTP which is largely read only from client POV. Useful for local self hosting servers alongside an mDNS solution. I'm currently hosting my comic files in this way.
