I created a script that uses the red/green leds as network indicators

I use the red LED to indicate that the AP is up. It then occasionally blinks, where the number of blinks is the number of connected devices.
I use the green LED to indicate connectivity to the internet. If it blinks once it's wireless, twice is wired.

Great! I've been thinking about changing RaspAP's static green hostapd LED into a network traffic indicator. It's slightly different from your use case, but your work provided the needed inspiration.
