CRAN Issue: Attempt to access 0-length R vector, due June 4

Accessing 0x000000000001 indicates trying to access elements of a
0-length R vector. I do not believe it is legal to attempt to copy zero
bytes from an invalid pointer and it seems the macOS sanitizer objects.

Reproduced using the registry.gitlab.com/rdatatable/dockerfiles/r-devel-clang-san container with PKG_CFLAGS=-fsanitize-recover=all PKG_LIBS=-fsanitize-recover=all added to make sure we see them all (not sure if it's necessary). Same error locations, similar backtraces (modulo the OS difference), same order. Fixed by cherry-picking #6820 & #6911, see #7007.
