Having programmatic pre and post-file edit hooks can be highly beneficial, opening up new possibilities for Roo and introducing several advantages:

• Token Savings: Consider a pre-editing hook that utilizes CLI commands to:

  • Minify and parse files before sending them to the LLM.
  • Remove unnecessary styling, new lines, or dead comments, and use short syntax like arrow functions when possible, adhering to pre-defined linting rules.
  • Send the files to the LLM for edits.
  • Receive a minified diff to apply to the minified file.
  • Apply a post-edit hook to restyle the file according to the user’s linting rules (e.g., using 180-character lines instead of the standard 80-character lines).

• Cleaner Context: This could involve parsing or summarizing long terminal output before sending it to the LLM. For more details, refer to issues optional error embedding #2379 and Summarized terminal output #2040.

  Also, I hope we can have a hook like post_edit to run something like prettier -w to eliminate the diagnostics.
