🔁 Steps to Reproduce

Make the VSCode window small if you have it on a big monitor --- maybe so it is like 1280 x 720 or something. Or try on a laptop. Then do a bunch of tasks, and a few that take a minute...then try to scroll up to the top of the window to catch up with messages. You'll find that the position in the window keeps "jumping" around, so it is hard to read.

💥 Outcome Summary

Expected smooth scrolling; the text locked to my scroll...but got jumping around. Discussed in Discord and it traces back (apparently) to a fix xyOz made to save memory consumption while scrolling.

What was causing the issue?

The aggressive message filtering and viewport management introduced in PR #6697 (to fix memory leaks) was causing messages to be dynamically added/removed during scrolling, which disrupted the scroll position on smaller screens.

How was it fixed?

I implemented a more conservative approach that maintains the memory optimizations while preventing scroll jumps:

1. Only apply message limiting for very long conversations (>1000 messages)
2. Increased the message limit from 500 to 750 when limiting is needed
3. Balanced the viewport rendering (1500px top/bottom instead of 3000px/1000px)
4. Expanded the LRU cache capacity and TTL for smoother transitions
5. Increased the viewport tracking window from 100 to 200 messages

Status

✅ All tests are passing
✅ Linting and type checks pass
✅ Most CI checks have passed (integration tests still running)
✅ Memory optimizations from PR #6697 are preserved

The fix should provide smooth, stable scrolling on smaller screens while maintaining the performance improvements for long conversations.
