Why does cmdline mapping not inherit the top-level mapping by default?

Why does cmdline not inherit the top-level mapping by default? Genuine question: I know blink.cmp is supposed to have good out-of-the-box settings. I'm just trying to understand why the defaults are the way they are to see if it's worth sticking with it.

I would think there's less cognitive load and complexity by simply using the same bindings and behaviors across cmdline, terminal, and top-level mappings by default. Curious to know why users might prefer different mappings and menu settings these these different modes.

Assuming you meant that it doesn't inherit the mappings by default, this was done to match the behavior of the built-in completions. I believe people generally prefer using <Tab> for showing and accepting completions in cmdline mode. Curious on your thoughts on this though. The terminal mode does inherit the default mode mappings

I see. I was thinking cmdline inheriting top-level keymap and cmdline.completion.menu.auto_show = true would be simpler and more intuitive defaults, since I imagine most people would who want auto completion menu in the buffer would also want the same for cmdline--mappings as well.

I do prefer <TAB> over Ctrl-y since the latter is hard reach on QWERTY and the defaults for Neovim are little too manual for my liking, but Ctrl-y being the default for Neovim can be a good enough reason to be the default for blink.cmp. My only contention is for whether it makes sense to default to cmdline inheriting top-level, so I'm curious if others actually use different mappings for cmdline if they use different menu display settings between the two.

Yeah, I agree. i find the built-in behavior pretty unintuitive, so I use the same settings as you. I've added this to the top of the cmdline documentation: ea59cce

I've also added this to #1059 so I'll revisit this when I eventually build v2.
