Data migrations mid-migration application

The Entity First way of auto-migrations seems very interesting, but doesn't handle the case when there needs to be an intermediate step of a data migration.

So, to have data migration / transformations mid-migrations it looks like the old-style using Migrator is still the only way to manage this?
