does git type installation require github user account?

I'm installing a new Sensor on Ubuntu 20.04 and when I run the sudo git clone https://github.com/Security-Onion-Solutions/securityonion command it's asking for credentials. I don't recall it doing that in the past. Is this going to be required from now on?
