All notable changes to this project will be documented here.
- Hovering a spatial annotation now draws a white outline that hugs its shape.
- Polish and update the confidence card to include the class name and fix its positioning.
- Fix shift-hover to properly start a new polygon complex layer.
- Fix bitmask moves to the image edge that were permanently truncating the mask. Now a translated mask bounces back to its previous position if it would be moved outside the image bounds.
- Improve read-only subtask handling. Subtasks marked
read_only: truenow actually prevent edits. Additionally, all subtasks may now be read-only (the previous "at least one non-read-only subtask" error has been removed).
- Fix wheel-zoom and drag-zoom focal point when the ULabel container is offset from the viewport origin.
handle_wheelanddrag_rezoomused to pass rawclientX/clientY(viewport coords) straight intorezoom, which treats its focal-point arguments as annbox-local. When the container sat at viewport(0, 0)the two frames coincided and the bug was invisible; anywhere else (e.g. hosted inside a centered dialog, a padded panel, or below a header) zoom would snap by roughly the annbox's screen offset. Both call sites now convert to annbox-local viagetBoundingClientRect()before callingrezoom, so zoom stays anchored to the cursor / mousedown point regardless of how the host embeds ULabel. - New config option
min_zoom_fit_ratio. Sets a zoom-out floor as a multiplier of the "whole image just fits the viewport" zoom.0(default) preserves the existing behavior (no floor).1.0prevents users from zooming out past the fit-to-viewport level.>1forces the image to always overflow. Zoom-in is unaffected. The floor recomputes from live annbox dimensions, so it adapts to browser resize.
- Fix regression in
set_annotations()where hover feedback and the brush stopped working after a swap. The 0.26.1 bulk-teardown path called$("#canvasses__<subtask>").empty(), which removed not just the per-annotation canvases but also the subtask's front canvas and the#dialogs__<subtask>container (which owns the brush circle and polygon ender).state.front_contextwas left pointing at a detached canvas so hover highlights painted into nothing, and the brush had no parent to attach to. The teardown now removes only> canvas.annotation_canvaschildren, leaving the front/back canvases and dialogs container intact. - New demo:
demo/set-annotations.htmlwith buttons that swap through empty / small / medium / large / RLE-bitmask / raw-Uint8Array-bitmask presets so this regression stays visible.
- Bitmask annotations can now be imported as raw
Uint8Arraypayloads. In addition to the existing RLE{ counts, size }shape,spatial_payloadmay now be{ data: Uint8Array, size: [height, width] }. This lets callers that already have the mask as a pixel buffer skip the RLE encode step before handing it to ULabel. - Loader no longer flashes on fast operations.
ULabelLoader.add_loader_div()now appends the overlay hidden and reveals it only after a delay (200 ms by default). Callers can pass an explicitdelay_ms— including0to opt back into immediate-show. - Performance: bulk teardown in
set_annotations(). The old per-annotationdestroy_annotation_contextloop redrew remaining siblings on each canvas after every removal. The new path drops caches on outgoing annotations, empties the subtask's canvasses container in one shot, and resetsannotation_contexts. Eliminates wasted redraws. - Correctness:
reset_interaction_state()inset_annotations()is now scoped to the target subtask. Previously the reset ran on every subtask, wipingis_in_edit/active_idon subtasks the caller wasn't touching.
- Memory leak fix on teardown. Bitmask annotations attach a decoded pixel
Uint8Array(_mask) and a tinted stencil canvas (_mask_render) to each annotation object. These persisted afterremove_listeners(), and consumers that rebuild ULabel per navigation could accumulate multi-GB retained heap. Changes:- New
destroy()method onULabel. Idempotent; releases per-annotation bitmask caches, empties action/undo streams, breaks toolbox back-references, clears the resize-observer array, and wipes the container DOM. Callers should preferdestroy()overremove_listeners()going forward. destroy_annotation_context()now also drops_mask/_mask_render/_bitmask_box_hinton the destroyed annotation, soset_annotations()also frees mask memory when it recycles contexts.- New
auto_destroy_on_detachconfig option (defaulttrue). When enabled, ULabel installs aMutationObserveron the container's root and callsdestroy()automatically after the container leaves the DOM. set_annotations(),get_annotations(), andredraw_all_annotations()now short-circuit with a warning if called afterdestroy().- Fixed a latent typo in
set_annotations()that wrote to a non-existentundo_stackproperty instead of clearing the realundone_stack.
- New
- The
ConfidenceSlidertoolbox item now also filtersbitmaskannotations - The
set_annotations()andswap_frame_image()public API methods now display the loading spinner while they run and return aPromise - Bitmask brush overlap modes (
exclude/overwrite) now resolve against bitmask annotations across all subtasks, not just the active one. - Performance improvements for jobs with many large bitmask annotations:
- Overlap resolution (
exclude/overwrite) now uses a bounding-box pre-filter and box-limited pixel operations, skipping masks that don't overlap the stroke and touching only the overlapping region of the ones that do, instead of scanning the whole mask for each candidate. - Moving a bitmask renders only the moving mask over a cached snapshot of the others (throttled to one render per animation frame) instead of re-rasterizing every mask on the canvas each frame.
- Each bitmask caches a pre-tinted render that is reused across redraws (brush dabs, moves, pan, zoom) and rebuilt only when the mask or its color changes, removing per-frame pixel-by-pixel rasterization.
- Overlap resolution (
- Add a
bitmaskannotation mode for raster (per-pixel) segmentation, selectable viaallowed_modes: ["bitmask", ...].- Painted with the brush (toggle with
toggle_brush_mode_keybind, defaultg); erase withtoggle_erase_mode_keybind(defaulte); resize the brush withincrease_brush_size_keybind/decrease_brush_size_keybind(defaults]/[) oralt+scroll. The brush/erase toggles now apply to bothpolygonandbitmaskmodes. - A paint stroke only joins an existing mask of the currently-selected class; painting a different class (or over empty space) starts a new mask of the selected class. Erase is class-agnostic. This differs from the
polygonbrush, which joins any polygon under the brush. - Hover a mask (with the brush off) to change its class via the ID dialog, or move/delete it like any other spatial annotation.
- Each bitmask annotation stores a single binary mask. On export,
spatial_payloadis a COCO-style run-length-encoded object:{ "counts": <number[]>, "size": [<height>, <width>] }(column-major, starting with a background run). Fully-erased masks are deprecated (ULabel's delete semantics). - Configurable render opacity for bitmask classes via
mask_annotation_opacity.
- Painted with the brush (toggle with
- Add brush overlap modes for bitmask painting, controlled globally and persisted to localStorage:
none(default),exclude, andoverwrite.exclude: newly-painted pixels never cover pixels owned by other undeprecated bitmask annotations (existing masks win).overwrite: newly-painted pixels are removed from any other bitmask annotation that owned them (the new mask wins); a mask fully carved away is deprecated.- Resolution is deferred to the end of a stroke (you see the active mask cover others, then it snaps to the resolved result on release) and only affects the pixels a stroke adds; erase is unaffected.
- Selectable via the Brush toolbox item (shown in bitmask mode) and keybinds
set_brush_overlap_none_keybind/set_brush_overlap_exclude_keybind/set_brush_overlap_overwrite_keybind(defaultsshift+n/shift+e/shift+o), which also appear in theKeybindstoolbox item. Initial value configurable viadefault_brush_overlap_mode. - Brush toolbox buttons have hover tooltips.
- Add
ConfidenceSlidertoolbox item (AllowedToolboxItem.ConfidenceSlider) that deprecates (hides) or shows spatial annotations based on their confidence values. Unlike the now-deprecatedKeypointSlider, it works with all spatial annotation types that have a confidence payload (bbox,bbox3,polygon,polyline,contour,tbar, andpoint), across every subtask.- Supports a single global "all" slider and/or per-class sliders, controlled by
class_filter_mode("toggle","all-only", or"class-only"). - Configurable via
confidence_slider_toolbox_item, includingfilter_min/filter_max/step_value, per-classdefault_values,target_spatial_types, andtarget_class_ids.
- Supports a single global "all" slider and/or per-class sliders, controlled by
- Add
get_confidence_slider_value()public API method to get the current confidence slider values. - The default
toolbox_order(used when none is provided) now includesConfidenceSliderinstead ofKeypointSlider. - Log a warning when both the
KeypointSliderandConfidenceSlidertoolbox items are enabled at once. - Deprecate the
KeypointSlidertoolbox item andget_keypoint_slider_value()in favor of theConfidenceSliderandget_confidence_slider_value(). TheKeypointSlideris retained for backwards compatibility and continues to filter onlypointannotations. It will be removed in a future release.
- Ship generated
.d.tsdeclarations (dist/types/) and a generated type entry (dist/index.d.ts) instead of pointing consumers' type resolution at the raw.tssource. This stops downstream TypeScript projects from compiling ULabel's source under their own (stricter)tsconfig. - Stop publishing the
src/directory in the npm package (filesnow shipsdist/only).
- Fix
AnnotationListclass ordering to match theAnnotationIDtoolbox item ordering, which is based on the configured class definition order in the subtask'sclassesarray - Add local storage of checkbox options for the

- when set to
- Add
anno_scaling_modeargument to theULabelconstructor, which allows users to specify how the size of annotations should be scaled when the zoom level is changed.- Options are
fixed,match-zoom, andinverse-zoom. - When set to
fixed, the line size of annotations will remain constant regardless of zoom level. - When set to
match-zoom, the line size of annotations will increase with increased zoom level. - When set to
inverse-zoom, the line size of annotations will decrease with increased zoom level.

anno_scaling_mode = "fixed". - Fix bug where fully erased polygon annotations would cause the an error upon submit.
- Fix bug where empty polygon layers could be included in a
submit_buttonhook payload.
- Fix bug where the
Vanishbutton wouldn't update itslockedstate when switching between subtasks. - Fix bug where clicking the
Vanishbutton would unexpectedly set the size cookie, causing future annotations in the same subtask to be loaded in a very small size on subsequent sessions, with the only way to recover being to increase the annotation size.
- Fixed bug introduced in v0.15.0 where using the erase tool such that a polygon was separated into multiple disjoint regions would cause an unrecoverable error.

This can be useful for boosting performance when working with many annotations.- This option is also present as a checkbox option in the
FilterDistancetoolbox item.
- This option is also present as a checkbox option in the
- Renamed
FilterDistanceConfigargshow_overlay_on_load->show_overlayfor internal consistency. - Changed format of
default_valuesarg inFilterDistanceConfig. The name for the single class mode default has changed from"single"->"closest_row", and each entry in the object should be aDistanceFromPolylineobject ({distance: <number>}), rather than a single number. See the updatedapi_spec.mdfor more details. KeypointSlidernow works on all points in every subtask, even when the subtask is not active.- Deprecated the
newandis_newfields inULabelAnnotation. There was internal inconsistency in their use, and some internal logic that depended on them was buggy and was sometimes preventing theFilterDistanceslider from working as expected.

DELETE_CLASS_IDwould show up as an option in the id dialog for polygons and bounding boxes
- Small fixes to
submit_buttonsin the toolbox.- Added optional
set_savedargument for eachsubmit_buttonto allow for the page to unload without warning if the button is clicked. - Changed default button css to better center the text.

- Fixed a bug that prevented custom submit buttons from being used with the legacy constructor arguments.
- Reworked the overlay rendering logic.
- Results in no longer having "infinite" zoom, but zooming should take no longer than ~2ms per operation instead of the >600ms it was previously taking.
- Also fixed a bug that caused ULabel to rerender the page on any keypress.
- Updated ULabel's constructor to use keyword arguments instead of 11 arguments that must be passed in in the correct order.
