Working with SPO service principal throws 'access token missing or malformed'

Question

I openend this issue in the m365 cli github and @waldekmastykarz suggested that maybe this is because an API limitation. Defininetly not something they can help with in the m365 cli or PnP.PowerShell group, which are the two different approaches I tried.

Is this indeed an API limitation or are we missing something?

I've also observed this behaviour attempting to retrieve the list of SPFx permission grants using either M365 CLI or PnP.PowerShell, using an app-only identity with certificate
