Can't set the app as the default app for camera

I have a Redmi phone HyperOS 2.0. I can't set the app (Simple Camera) as default app for camera. Another user here, that uses MIUI, has also ran into that problem (he opened an issue here).

The app hasn't been updated for 2 years. I want you to make an update or series of updates featuring all the requested bugfixes and improvements. Please.
