 SCS wird seit Juli 2021 vom Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (BMWK) gefördert und vom Bundesverband für digitale Souveränität e.V. (Open Source Business Alliance) durch­geführt. Ein internationales Ökosystem von mittlerweile über 25 Unternehmen trägt mit über 50 Softwareentwicklern zum Erfolg des Sovereign Cloud Stack bei. Gemeinsam werden offene Stan­dards für eine moderne, föderierbare Open-Source-Cloud- und Container-Plattform definiert und in einem offenen Entwicklungsprozess unter Verwendung bewährter Open-Source-Komponenten umgesetzt. Gleichzeitig wird das Wissen und die Praxis aus dem Betrieb transparent zur Verfügung gestellt, um die Schwierigkeiten bei der Bereitstellung hochwertiger und sicherer Cloud-Dienste zu minimieren. Bereits sieben Anbieter nutzen die SCS-Technologie produktiv, um wirklich souveräne und DSGVO-konforme Public-Cloud-Angebote zu betreiben. Weitere SCS-basierte Cloud-Infrastrukturen (Public und Private Clouds) befinden sich im Aufbau. SCS ist ein Lighthouse Projekt von Gaia-X und stellt die Entwicklungsplattform für die Gaia-X Federation Services / Cross-Federation Service Components (GXFS/XFSC) bereit, außerdem trägt SCS zur Umsetzung der Deutschen Verwaltungscloud (DVC) bei.
