Path to stabilization

I've started [a thread on rust-internals](https://internals.rust-lang.org/t/making-format-machinery-more-amenable-to-dynamic-formatting/11089/6) with the goal to implement *something* that would also enable this crate to work on stable. I'd be happy for you to weigh in, or suggest some other way forward.
