AfterImport event could not retrieved global variable after processed in handle()

I have a protected variable define in my Import Class and it will just do a normal increment counter in my model() method. I am able to get the total number in AfterChunk event listener but I am not able to get this counter AfterImport event listener. Is this like a bug or expected result?

    {
        $this->counter = 0;
    }

    {

            AfterChunk::class => function () {
                Log::info('after_chunk:'.$this->counter);
            },

            AfterImport::class => function (AfterImport $event) {
                Log::info('after_import:'.$this->counter);
            },
        ];
    }

    public function model(array $row)
    {
        $this->counter++;

        //new Class model logic here

        return $class;
    }
