The modem SIM800L seems a good one. We have just to take care about power supply from 3.6 to 4.2V. (Not 3.3 or 5V!!) This with a good capacitor to absorb peaks of current. |

I will not be getting hardware to test with, as the costs are beyond my budget. Is there an API or something I can send a message to with this code I haven't looked into it much yet.. here stateside there are a LOT of laws about use of stuff like this (why I used email) |

Ok, I understand about restrictions in USA.
In fact these modules are GSM modems. They work with AT commands like
modems. so there is no API.
To my knowledge, there is no API. However, there are libraries and code
examples for them on Github.

These modules are very widespread. Surely because of their very low cost
(Between 3 and 5$).
If you want, I could be the beta tester for your code !

Kelly, Another request concerns SMS. Current technique is based on Mail-SMS and Its use is becoming difficult locally because French operators are increasingly tending to abandon this service. This is why I find that the option of sending SMS via an Hardware SMS gateway could be an excellent alternative. This would work with a 4G/LTE cellular modem (Huawei Stick,... or Hat for Rpi) to be able to send SMS without Internet (https://github.com/daddyfix/cellular_modem_communicator).
This option would also have the advantage of offering resilience in the event of an Internet outage.
