Gracefully swap table columns / data

In my app, I have several reports, switchable by tab, but a single instance of React Table to view them. I'm using a lot of controlled state in my own useStates, and I'm wondering what the correct way is to start from a clean slate each time I switch reports. Currently, I have useEffects that sync everything, but I find that sort of awkward sometimes and have found situations where keeping the controlled state in sync with the data falls a render behind, and I get errors thrown about missing column ID's when I toggle. Am I missing something obvious here? How should I handle this?
