What should we use as YouTube's default page to replace the trending section in the app?

With YouTube's trending section removal on July 21, 2025, we have to find new pages of content to replace it in the app.

We currently want to implement the following sections of YouTube and YouTube Charts:

• trending podcasts videos;
• trending gaming videos;
• trending movie trailers;
• trending music clips;
• running livestreams;
• and maybe trending sports videos: for some reason, YouTube doesn't seem to care about your country set in its settings and only use your IP address location for this trending part.

As there will be no general feed anymore, we don't know what to set as default, so we're asking you with this poll what do you want.

Imho livestreams make the most sense. All others imply that the general newpipe audience cares about that, and I don't think there ever will be a happy 90% overlap of interests in these categories.

The livestream is a good common ground. You can have live streams in any category.

I would say the same applies to podcasts

If I had to choose I'd personally choose podcasts, rather than livestreams. A big part of the appeal of livestreams is live chat, which NewPipe does not support. On the other hand it is ideal for podcasts thanks to the ability to listen with the app in the background.

I assume this is a temporary solution before a more comprehensive one is implemented?

IMO none of these options sound very good, perhaps the user should be presented with an option to select one (or more?) at first startup? The same dialog could also provide the option to just not have any trending pages, or suggest importing subscriptions instead.

(personally I never use the trending page and I always remove it, and I assume a lot of NewPipe's generally more tech-savvy users don't care about the trending videos either).

This would not be a temporary solution, since the main page tabs can already be customized. I also think the trending section is useless and I never use it, but when a person opens NewPipe for the first time, there has to be some content shown that clearly tells "hey, this app actually has some content". Every service so far has had a default trending section we could use for this, so we would like to find a new default for YouTube too. ,

But yeah a nice onboarding would be a much better UX for non-tech-savy people, and furthermore we should add an edit button to the tabs layout so people know they can edit them (which might not be obvious).

Maybe by defualt you can show videos from all this cattegorries.

That would mean making like 7 network requests every time, so I'd avoid it
