Updating footer

Is there a way to update the text shown in the footer? I have tried resizing, hacks to remove the widget, everything I can think of. The use case is a key is pressed, now more options need to be provided based on which key is pressed.

Example:
User presses key "x"
Now keys "y" and "z" are bound, with their options.
Footer text must now be updated.
