A region diverged sequences between heterologous sex chromosomes (e.g. X and Y, or Z and W), where recombination has been surpressed. On the sex determining chromosome (Y or W), the sex-specific region may include inversions, deletions and hemizygosity, as well being different in length (heteromorphism). The sex specific regions are often flanked by pseudoautosomal regions.
