Best way to set preferences?

I currently set the preferences for this app (deployed to multiple tablets):

adb shell mkdir -m 777 -p                                        /data/data/xyz.wallpanel.app/shared_prefs
adb push  /tmp/xyz.wallpanel.app_preferences.xml                 /data/data/xyz.wallpanel.app/shared_prefs/xyz.wallpanel.app_preferences.xml
adb shell chmod -R 777                                           /data/data/xyz.wallpanel.app/shared_prefs

this is all a workaround for not being able to write to /sdcard/sdcard

I noticed that it's possible to set some preferences using something like this but couldn't work out what the equivalent preferences handler for the app would be.

adb shell content write --user 10 --uri content://xyz.wallpanel.app/<something>  < test.file
adb shell content query --uri content://xyz.wallpanel.app/prefs --projection name:value --where 'name=\"user_rotation\"'

If there's an android expert that could help me with this, I'd be most appreciative.
