PCB correct wiring

Not sure if this matters, but I was comparing the PCB schematics and they don't match. I'd guess that the drain needs to be on the display as it flows back to the ground on the main PCB as it's the source of the 5V.

My amature circuitry understanding makes me think Till's is correct as he has the display ground going to the MOSFET's drain, through it, and then out through the source to the mainboard's ground.

I can tell you that I have the Thorad 1.2 PCB from
https://oshwlab.com/tradstaat/coffeepcb because I really hate using SMD-Parts, especially when it is not necessary and making it unnecessarily complicated instead of simple thats why I took this design.
And I never got my display properly working like I wanted (power tripping always didnt work out).
Heck, I even bridged and got more working than before, so I was pretty sure there was an issue in the whole power tripping.
I just hadnt the time to debug and make sure that my IRLZ44N is opening/closing properly etc. but it makes much more sense for me that there seems to be a difference between PCB designs etc....
I can check it out and try to check out if the pcb does open/close/do the powertripping like it should with a multimeter but I am not very sure how to approach this confidently.

Bottom line what I want to say: I can check out and re/de solder or solder the IRLZ44N to other parts and swap legs or so...

This would make much more sense for me, otherwise Till would have massive issues and never would get it working if your conclusion is right.

EDIT:
I messed a bit up, but It seems to that I have found a working setup with the Thorad PCB:

Basically I have cut/connected as follows:

cut mainboard to gnd

cut all as follows to make sure nothing interferes:

and basically I connected:
Gate: GPIOX
Drain: Mainboard
Source: Display + GND

Everything else did not work on me. I think I literally tried every other combination.

It seems that the wiring from
https://github.com/TillFleisch/ESPHome-Philips-Smart-Coffee?tab=readme-ov-file#wiring does not seem to be right in my case.
I still dont know why though and at this point im not gonna ask it myself and just enjoy a working machine.

Update: Nevermind, it worked for some time and now I am stuck on a non working Buttons (they are lighting up though)
